My dad's side of the family originated from Russia although, they were German. They left Germany after the Seven Years' War. In Russia, they settled near the Volga river in Herzog and began to inherit the nickname of Volga German. In the 1876, Peter Yunker (my great great great great grandpa) arrived in New York, New York on the American Hamburg Line along with a large Volga German population. He stayed in Topeka for a year and then settled in Victoria, Kansas alsong with the rest of the Volga Germans from russia and his brother Martin Yunker. Today there is such thing as "The Herzog Fest" in the town of Victoria, Kansas.
